The Cowden protocol comes up all the time, as it is one of the most popular protocols in our community. We wanted to gather Cowden information in one place for members to reference when it comes up.

A quick-view graphic with the key points is at the bottom of this post.

WHAT IS THE COWDEN PROTOCOL?

- It was developed by Dr. Lee Cowden, a board-certified physician and cardiologist.

- It uses Nutramedix herbal remedies on a month-by-month schedule.

- It pairs herbs for microbial support with herbs for detox support, plus a few general supplements.

- There are two versions: the original program and the newer 6-month Cowden+ program, which has a simpler twice-a-day schedule.

- The newer program starts with a few days of detox and energy support before the microbial herbs begin, and some herbs start at a low amount and slowly increase.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL

- Some people may have a temporary Herx-type reaction, like fatigue, headache or stomach upset. Slowing down, staying well hydrated and talking with your practitioner are suggested.

- Work with your practitioner to decide if this protocol is a good fit for you.

RESEARCH

A 2020 Johns Hopkins lab study tested several herbs against the Lyme bacteria. Cat's claw, the herb in Samento, showed activity against the non-growing form of the bacteria. These were lab studies only, and human studies are still needed.
