ALINIA

This prescription is not as well known, but I did use it in my treatment against Babesia, and so did my daughter.

WHAT IS ALINIA?
-Alinia is the brand name for nitazoxanide. It is a prescription antiparasitic medicine.
-It is approved to treat diarrhea caused by two intestinal parasites, Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The liquid is approved for ages 1 and up, and the tablets for ages 12 and up.
-It is believed to work by blocking an enzyme these parasites need to make energy (the enzyme is called pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase, or PFOR).
-Some Lyme doctors use it "off label," which means for something other than what it was approved for.
MY EXPERIENCE
-My daughter and I both used Alinia as part of our Babesia treatment.
-I used to pay about $300 a month for it, and that was considered a good deal at the time. Prices change, so ask your doctor or pharmacy about the current cost.
WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS
-Research on Alinia for Babesia is very limited.
-Lyme doctors don't all agree on it. Dr. Marty Ross shares that he doesn't feel it works for Babesia, and he feels it should be saved as a last-resort option for Lyme. Many other Lyme doctors do use Alinia, and my daughter and I both used it in our Babesia treatment.
-Every Lyme doctor has their own approach, and that's okay. What you use is between you and your doctor.
GOOD TO KNOW
-It is taken by mouth with food.
-The most common side effects listed are stomach pain, headache, nausea and a change in urine color.
-Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, HIV or other immune system problems, or if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
-Share every medicine, vitamin and herbal supplement you take with your doctor.
-Drink plenty of fluids while taking it.
