WHAT IS ALCHORNEA?
-Alchornea cordifolia is an African plant, sometimes called African Christmas bush.
-In parts of Africa, it has long been used for malaria.
-Earlier studies found it may fight germs and calm inflammation.
-It hasn't been studied in people yet.
WHAT THE BABESIA RESEARCH SHOWS
-In a 2021 Johns Hopkins lab study, 46 herbal extracts were tested against Babesia duncani. Alchornea cordifolia was one of five herbs that slowed its growth by more than half. The other four were cryptolepis, Artemisia annua, Chinese skullcap and Japanese knotweed.
-The researchers then focused their next tests on the stronger herbs, so alchornea was not put through the test that checked whether Babesia grew back. Of the three herbs tested for regrowth, only cryptolepis kept Babesia from growing back at the higher amounts.
-This was a lab study, so human studies are still needed.
HOW IT'S USED
-Stephen Buhner generally recommended a blend of sida acuta, alchornea and cryptolepis for Babesia.
