Sourcing minerals from food is the absolute best way to get what our bodies need. We can supplement the ones that aren't found easily or in high amounts in our food.
We don't necessarily agree with everything below but are just providing the links because a lot of the info is relevant and helpful to understanding the importance of balancing your minerals when you are chronically ill.
We also feel lyme patients should check manganese and zinc levels in particular on blood work. It isn't recommended to supplement with these minerals if you’re not low on them. BUT other things like magnesium should be supplemented because we know we no longer get enough of that in the soils that grow our food.

"A number of trace elements have been shown to be important for adequate functioning of the immune system, including copper, zinc, and selenium. Both deficiencies and luxus levels of trace elements can influence various parameters of the immune system, such as antibody responses, cell-mediated immunity, and natural killer (NK) cell activity."
"Minerals are essential for life, not just for us, but for all plants, animals, and even insects. Each of the minerals sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as well as the trace minerals iron, zinc, copper, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and iodine must be consumed in the diet for optimum health."
