CROHN'S AND LYME

Updated: Aug 28

"Lyme disease should be recognized as a potential trigger of autoimmune conditions, especially Crohn's disease. This underlying cause is novel to the literature and may help many patients obtain the proper diagnosis so that curative treatment may be received."

"Crohn's Disease is chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by inflammation of the GI tract. It is believed to be autoimmune in nature, where the mucus membranes essentially attack themselves."

"Today we’re going to explore three of the most common – and commonly confused – inflammatory bowel conditions:

Crohn’s Disease

Ulcerative Colitis

Celiac Disease"

"In a study of children with gastrointestinal complaints, researchers examined a larger number of pathogens than in previous studies. Bartonella species, Borrelia burgdorferi, Helicobactor pylori and Mycoplasma fermentans were found in 64% of the children, with 32% infected with more than one of these pathogens."

"Borrelia were found in five patients with the chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The inflammation may have been due to the spirochete itself, a reactive product related to their presence in the gastrointestinal tract, or a consequence of medications used to treat Lyme disease."

"Medication is not the only way that the gut can be impacted by Lyme disease; the infection itself can cause gastrointestinal issues."

"Gastrointestinal symptoms in Lyme disease patients can be fairly common. For decades studies have reported B. burgdorferi bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of Lyme patients. In fact, a 1999 study found “the presence of Lyme disease in the gastrointestinal tract when confirmed by PCR for B. burgdorferi DNA in 14 of 20 patients with the diagnosis of Lyme and in two of the control subjects with Crohn’s disease."

"Many people have had their ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s go into remission without relying on lifetime immunosuppressant drugs or surgery. "
