I was told I could cycle this in to my binder regime so I have limited experience with it. I was asked if was sensitive to shellfish before using. It is derived from shellfish. Chitosan is the result of the enzymatic treatment of chitin, a shell component. People who are allergic to shellfish may not tolerate Chitosan.

Chitosan is considered equivalent to Welchol. People use it to bind mycotoxins, cholesterol, and even weight reduction. Chitosan works by binding to bile salts, so it binds to all fatty acids. It says it should not be used long-term.

"Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from the shell of crustaceans, supports the removal of a wide array of toxins from the body, including mold toxins, heavy metals, and LPS. Chitosan is able to chelate the metals manganese and zinc, both of which are necessary for the lifecycle and function of B. burgdorferi. Chitosan has been shown to act as a biofilm-disrupting agent, particularly when the chitosan is of low molecular weight. Low molecular weight chitosan has also been shown to reduce symptoms attributed to the die-off reaction in Lyme disease. In the gut, the larger chitosan particles have a prebiotic effect, promoting the growth of Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp., which are predominant healthy flora that also support the reduction of inflammation and a normal immune response."

This prevents the mycotoxins from being continuously recirculated between the liver, blood, and gut. Common binders include activated charcoal, bentonite clay, and chitosan.

Another relevant binding agent is chitosan, which acts by preventing the absorption of lipids by binding to bile salts and removing toxins secreted in the bile.<14> It has also proven to be an effective binder of endotoxin.<15> In a clinical trial with Lyme patients, chitosan was shown to reduce multiple symptoms associated with a Herxheimer reaction, including pain, sleep disturbances, and mood alterations "

Microchitosan has shown tremendous antimicrobial activity with mold as well as the ability to lessen the neurological symptoms that plague many of my patients long after the more acute symptoms of mold exposure have resolved. My suspicion is that since the product contains nanoparticles of chitosan, it is small enough to easily pass through the gut and could also be passing the blood-brain barrier to detoxify the whole body more therapeutically, especially for those patients who genetically have a defect in their ability to produce glutathione or who have shown impaired ability to remove biotoxins.

CHI has been shown to have promising uses as an adsorbent for the removal of various mycotoxins, heavy metal ions, and dyes.
